My research focuses mainly on ecological niche partitioning of sympatric freshwater bacterioplankton populations. Freshwater microbes are centrally involved in chemical turnover processes, yet individual microbial populations greatly differ in their respective metabolic and ecological features. I am especially interested in oligotrophic ultramicrobacteria, microbes that dominate in almost all freshwater habitats; however, the reasons for their success are still largely unknown as they typically escape cultivation. My aim is to get a synoptic view of the functional roles and phylogeographic distribution patterns of different microbial taxa to identify the main drivers for their success in lakes.
My current work focuses on planktonic methylotrophic Betaproteobacteria, I recently isolated >120 strains and established a new genus (Candidatus Methylopumilus sp.). These strains are ideal models for oligotrophic, highly specialized ultramicrobacteria with extremely small and streamlined genomes.
