Job title: DIRECTOR of the INSTITUTE of HYDROBIOLOGY

The Biology Centre (BC) of the Czech Academy of Sciences (http://www.bc.cas.cz) performs mainly fundamental, and also applied, research in five biological disciplines represented by five institutes. The Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB), http://www.hbu.cas.cz , has nearly 60 years of tradition of freshwater ecosystem research with the main emphasis on lakes and man-made reservoirs. A new term for the director of the institute commences in 2017. The director is responsible for overall functioning of the Institute on scientific and organizational levels. He/she runs the institute with the help of the deputy, executive and scientific councils of IHB, the secretariat and the support units of the Biology Centre. The candidate will be required to present a vision of future IHB directing that balances the traditional research scope of the institute with new promising research directions.

REQUIREMENTS:
We seek an outstanding professional with an international reputation to lead research, development and public interactions. Candidates with wide ecological scope are particularly encouraged to apply. This position includes research and administrative responsibilities in cooperation with a number of research bodies and other stakeholders. The director provides leadership for research and for improving institute facilities in order to enhance the institute’s impact on science and society.
The ideal candidate will have:

  • a Ph.D. or equivalent relevant to the research scope of the institute;
  • a strong record of publication and externally funded research;
  • experience with mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students and university teaching;
  • evidence of potential for excellence in administration, demonstrated effectiveness in communicating with diverse audiences;
  • track record of interacting creatively, collaboratively, and productively with other scientists;
  • excellent written and spoken English;
  • high moral qualities

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for appointments in accordance with § 17, odst. 4) – 6) of the law No. 341/2005 Sb., on public research institutions, that is, they must have legal capacity to work and enter into a contract, upon request they must be able to provide a clean criminal record, which is proven by a criminal record/police certificate no more than three months old and must not participate in the business of legal entities operating in an area which is the object of a public research institution's activities.

The applicant should be prepared to take part in three levels of interviews with the representatives of IHB and BC (at least final interview in person).

The term of office is five years, with onset on July 1st 2017. A trial period may be applied at the start of the term. We offer a highly competitive salary in local standards commensurate with the applicant’s experience and skills. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop his/her own research agenda/group compatible with the overall scope of the IHB BC.

BACKGROUND
The site of IHB, Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south of Prague with 100,000 inhabitants, a relaxed atmosphere, and a growing expert community at the Biology Centre and the University of South Bohemia. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous opportunities for research and leisure activities.
Living costs are low by international standards. Foreign applicants will receive support in transferring to the Czech Republic. Czech courses are available for foreign staff to reach a basic level of proficiency in everyday situations. Czech and English are being used on equal rights as working languages of IHB, so applicants from abroad are most welcome.
